Major Richard J. O’Malley was killed in action on July 16, 1944 while positioning his men to fight for the liberation of Sainteny.
"Major General Raymond Barton, Commander 4th Infantry Division, was so moved by this tragic loss of a gallant leader, he ordered the mass firing of three volleys of the 4th Infantry Division artillery and mortars into enemy lines. This was the only time in World War II that this honor was given by the 4th Infantry Division and the only time to this day."

Major O’Malley's awards include: Silver Star for gallantry in action Bronze Star for heroism in action against the enemy Three Purple Hearts for wounds received British Military Cross of Gallantry for leadership in action over and above the call of duty
